GETTING YOUR BRACES OFF

What to Expect at Your Braces Removal Appointment

After months or even years of wearing braces, it’s easy to get excited about the day when you finally get them taken off. However, some worry about the actual process of having the braces removed, as well as what happens after your braces are gone. The procedure to get your braces removed shouldn’t be a source of anxiety, but rather one of anticipation. Soon, you’ll be seeing your new and improved smile, braces-free. But we understand that knowing what’s going to happen can help to ease any worries, so here’s what to expect from your braces removal appointment.

What is the Procedure for Removing Braces?

Your orthodontist will use a set of sanitary orthodontic pliers to gently squeeze the bases of the brackets of your braces. When this happens, the bonding adhesive is gently broken and releases, allowing the removal of the brackets. Once all of the brackets are detached, the bonding cement is carefully removed with a dental tool that will also polish the enamel of your tooth. Your orthodontist will probably wait until all the brackets are taken off for this step, as the cement also prevents any damage to the enamel of your teeth during the removal of the brackets.

What Kind of Condition Will My Teeth Be In After My Braces Removal?

As long as you’ve taken good care of your teeth, brushing and flossing diligently throughout your orthodontic treatment, your teeth should actually come out of the removal appointment looking quite white and shiny, especially because the tool used to remove the bonding plastic also tends to polish tooth enamel.

You should also know that your gums may be a bit inflamed after getting your braces off, but this should go away within a few days as long as you properly brush and floss. The inflammation is normal and typically comes from the process of removing the bonding plastic from the tooth enamel. If the inflammation or irritation lasts more than a couple of days, you should contact us – Walk in during Office Hour.

Next Step: Take Care of That New Smile!

Once your braces come off, it’s time to enjoy that new smile. However, it’s important to also remember that, just because the braces are gone, your orthodontic treatment is not over. You still have to wear your retainer and take care of your teeth as your orthodontist instructs, and you should continue visiting your general dentist at least twice a year.
